Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (Part X – Mother is a first Teacher)

It is true that mother and Sanskar (संस्कार) are important to make a gentleman. Because for the birth of Shivajiraj, it is necessary to have a mother like Jijamata first. Without Jijau’s blessings and sanskars as well as good education and training, the baby ‘Shivaji’ could not have become ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’.

Maharaj got such great and such recognition only because of the sanskars instilled in him.

‘जर नसत्या जिजाबाई तर कसा घडला असता शिवाजी’. (नवीन म्हण)

Translation :

‘If there was no Jijabai, how would Shivaji have happened’ .

Meaning :

If Jijabai Maharani Saheb had not given proper sanskars to Maharaj, would Maharaj have been so efficient?

One more Marathi proverb/saying will give you the answer to abvoe question and that is,

‘जिच्या हाती पाळण्याची दोरी ती जगाते उध्दारी’ (म्हण)

Translation :

‘Whosoever has a rope child’s cradle, the one who secure the world’.

Meaning :

The child acts like a mother does or teach to her child.

Jijabai Maharani Saheb’s quality to face the situation with courage and firmness without allowing any kind of fault in her duty was fully inherited by Shivaji Maharaj. She told stories of God Ram, who killed Ravana for kidnaping Godess Sita and also explain bravery of God Ram to Maharaj. She also told stories of God Bhim, who killed Bakasura and rescued the weak people and also explain bravery of God Bhim to Maharaj and many more stories likewise. It is believed that she and Shivaji Maharaj used to listen to ‘Bhavarth Ramayana’ from Puranikas. It was because of these sanskars performed by her, little Shivaji could become ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’. Jijabai Maharani Saheb not only told stories to the Maharaj but also taught the first lessons of politics by sitting next to him.
