Main types of Fort:

Bhudurg:

Flat ground, open space, embankments, trenches etc., a fort surrounded by these things called Bhuikot or Bhudurg.
Examples : Chakan, Paranda, Naladurg etc.

Bhuikots require high fortifications and special fencing for security. Chhatrapati was mainly made Bhuikot of black stone. They take special care of the security and structure of Bhudurga. Similarly, they were also conscious of the superior quality of its construction.

Giridurg:

Giridurg is a fort built on the top of a hill or mountain in high mountain ranges.
Examples : Raigad, Pratapgad, Rajgad, Torna etc.

Chhatrapati used to give special preference to Giridurga. Such forts are more common in dense forests and are equally difficult to climb. Maharaj always preferred Giridurga for the establishment of Swarajya and for settlement. First Rajgad and then Raigad, Giridurgas functioned as the capital of Swarajya during Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

Jaldurg:

Jaldurg is a fortified fort built on a rock, island, in the sea, completely surrounded by water.
Examples : Sindhudurg, Padyadurg, Janjira etc.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is the father of Indian Navy. They built Jaldurgas to strengthen their navy and make it stronger. Maharaj’s navy was the largest navy in the world at that time. Maharaj was the first king in Asia who used the sea to defend his kingdom.

Sub-Types of Fort :

Vandurg:

The remote forts surrounded by thick forests and thickets fall under this type of forest.
Example : Vasota etc.

Joined Forts:

Forts on different peaks of the same mountain.
Examples : Purandar-Vajragad, Chandan-Vandan Gad etc.
