The first language a person speaks or learns after birth is considered as his or her ‘Mother Tongue’. Mother Tongue is the language in which our mother speaks, thinks, dreams and therefore mother tongue is called as ‘Mother Language’. Mother tongue represents the social as well as linguistic identity of any individual. We should acquire knowledge in our mother tongue because no other language can take the place of mother tongue. Just as cow’s milk cannot replace mother’s milk and vice-versa. Even small children are told to feed on mother’s milk even if cow’s milk is available to do so. Even though you have knowledge of other languages, you must have knowledge of mother tongue. A child acquires the culture of his mother tongue in his mother’s womb. We get familiar with our mother tongue only from our home.
Mother tongue is essential to maintain the unity of the nation. Learning another language is also a good thing. Our Shambhu Raje knew 14 languages, but they preferred their mother tongue for business as well as communication and discussion. Because obviously they knew the importance of mother tongue. Scientists have proven that a person who knows mother tongue along with other languages is much more intelligent than a person who only knows another language. The main basis of human progress is his mother tongue.
The language we speak from birth, the language in which we are inculcated, the language we learn to transact, and the language through which we connect with our culture and progress is our mother tongue. No one can save a nation from apocalypse where the mother tongue starts to disappear. So our mother tongue, food, culture, music, dance etc. should be nurtured. Education in mother tongue helps children learn faster and it is more beneficial for children. Mother tongue is the main tool for establishing emotional, religious, cultural etc. unity. Mother tongue plays an important role in maintaining the unity, integrity and development of the nation. If a nation is to be strengthened, the cultivation of mother tongue is very necessary. Mother tongue is a fundamental component of independent and prosperous nation.
